Family therapy involves a whole family, several family members, or several people who have strongly supportive, long-term roles with each other even if they are not related by blood or marriage.
Family therapy is often beneficial if a family is having problems getting along. It can also be used when one person is having the problem and others may be unconsciously contributing to maintaining the problem or need to be informed about the problem in a safe environment. Family relationships are an important factor in psychological health. The therapy involves coaching members to communicate and behave towards each other in a way than enhances strengths, wisdom, and mutual support. This is done without blaming individuals, rather teaching new skills.
Sometimes children need their own therapy, in addition to family therapy. In that case, we will refer out to another skilled therapist specializing in children unless we have someone on staff who has that expertise. Both Mary Ann McLean LCSW and Brad Gilbert MFT Intern work with adolescents.
